Art Teacher in CA-- 'Artery "Controversy" is perfect example of Media Exploitation'

Dear Charlotte -- I read with great interest the "controversy" over the 2008 "From Soup to Saints" exhibition. I am an art teacher in Gilroy, California and I am thinking about using the article as an assignment for my students. This is a perfect example of media exploitation: blowing things way out of proportion. If I had not done a little more research, I would have never found your web site. What a joy it was to see refreshing new ideas and excellent examples of artists' statements which I am trying to get my art students to write. Do you ever consider "out of the area" artists for your exhibit? If not, I think I might try something like this in my hometown. I really like it and it would give my students to do that is REAL art. I would definitely be interested in creating a panel because I am a very passionate artist (when I have the time). Thank you for "The Artery." It made my Saturday morning. Love to hear from you and perhaps some suggestions for doing something like this in Gilroy. I am trying so hard to "Keep the arts alive!" but "the powers that be" (and Arnold) keep cutting arts and funding. We should have a big tombstone in our town: "The arts are dead here." Thanks again --"Keeping the Arts Alive! in my neck of the woods. Rick Charvet Visual Arts Educator Gilroy, CA
